But this disease provokes ââ¬Å"unusual shifts in a personââ¬â¢s mood, energy, and ability to function, (â⬠¦) can result in damaged relationships, poor job or school performance, and even suicideâ⬠(NIMH, 2008). NIMH remarks the following about the bipolar disorder: ââ¬Å"Manic-depression distorts moods and thoughts, incites dreadful behaviors, destroys the basis of rational thought, and too often erodes the desire and will to live. It is an illness that is biological in its origins, yet one that feels psychological in the experience of it; an illness that is unique in conferring advantage and pleasure, yet one that brings in its wake almost unendurable suffering and, not infrequently, suicide.â⬠(2008) ââ¬Å"Psychotic features (e.g., hallucinations, delusions) may be present in manic, mixed or depressive episodes and tend to relate to the mood. For example, during manic episodes, patients may believe they are invulnerable to physical harm and, during major depressive episodes, patients may believe they are guilty of a great crime or sin.
